In South Africa, in particular, the competition has gathered entries from more than 10 000 students. These students, from 25 colleges and universities, competed online this year.

Huawei South Africa has made announcements on winning teams and individuals from the national finals round of its Global ICT ( Information and Communications Technology) Competition.

This was streamed via an online awards webinar.

Dr Blade Nzimande has hailed Huawei for it’s investment, given the country’s need for growth in an increasingly digitised age.

Teams from Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and University of Venda (UNIVEN) made significant showings. Highest honours went to TUT and UNIVEN, who obtained the First to Excellence Prize in Network and Cloud streams.

Two university instructors Topside Ehleketani Mathonsi (TUT) and Kudakwashe Madzime (UNIVEN) are recipients of individual awards for Excellent Instructor for First Half of 2020.

Worldwide, the Huawei ICT Competition 2019 – 2020 has globally embraced 70 countries and has attracted 15 000 contestants from more than 2 000 universities and colleges.

In South Africa, in particular, the competition has gathered entries from more than 10 000 students. These students, from 25 colleges and universities, competed online this year.

Twenty students were acknowledged as performing outstandingly during the South African national round. Twelve of them have been selected to participate in two teams in the South African Regional Final.

They will be joined by other students from sub-Saharan countries.

The winners from the Regional Final will proceed to the Global final, which will be held online at the end of October.

The purpose of the competition is to encourage the development of impressive ICT talent, select qualified talent for the industry, provide encouragement and identify active participants for digital transformation, for future contributions to a talent pool.

Shenbo Tang, Director of Huawei South Africa Enterprise Delivery and Service, said expert engineers were responsible for training the selected students to help them prepare for the regional exam. This, with the intention of helping them win and represent our country in the international final.
