This month is Organ Donor Awareness Month.
Organ Donor Awareness Month is when you can make a decision about becoming a donor and potentially saving or changing someone’s life by donating tissues or organs.
South Africa has an impressive track record in the field of organ transplantation.
This month is the one in which the first heart transplant was done at Groote Schuur Hospital by Professor Chris Barnard. Countrywide, there’s a critical shortage of hearts, livers, lungs, kidneys, pancreas and corneas.
Apparently, one organ donor can save up to eight lives, but they will also change the lives of thousands of South Africans on the transplant waiting list.
