The coding and robotics curriculum that is being developed for Grades R to 9 is almost finalised. It is expected to be completed by the end of July.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga revealed this during a virtual plenary session where she presented the adjusted vote for 2020 and 2021 recently.

The adjusted budget is now sitting at R23.2 billion after budget cuts caused by funds being reallocated due to the Covid-19 situation.

“The DBE has developed the coding and robotics curriculum … which is currently being repackaged for proper sequencing and seamless progression from one phase to the next,” said Motshekga.

Once the curriculum has been polished, it will need to go to Umalusi for approval.

The unveiling of the coding and robotics curriculum forms part of the Department of Basic Education’s emphasis on a curriculum focusing on skills and competencies within a changing global situation.

When it has been approved by the quality council authority, teachers and subject advisors will be trained online.

Motshekga says the Education, Training and Development sector and the Skills Education Training Authority have made R7 million available for the training.
